Rice polish is a commercially useful material recovered during rice milling. It is bought mainly as an ingredient for animal-feed production, although its exact composition and suitability depend on the mill, the rice, the processing sequence and how the material has been handled after milling. For buyers, that variability is the central point: “rice polish” is a trade description, not a universal specification.
A reliable purchase therefore starts with the intended use and a current specification sheet. Feed manufacturers, livestock producers and commodity buyers should confirm the material offered, agree the quality parameters that matter to their process, and plan storage and delivery around the product's relatively limited stability.
What is rice polish?
Rice polish, also called rice polishing in some markets, is a fine rice-milling by-product produced as brown rice is polished into white rice. The polishing stage removes material from the outer layers of the grain and may also produce small particles of broken kernel. The resulting material can contain varying proportions of bran, germ, fine endosperm and other rice particles.
Terminology is not consistent between countries or mills. A supplier may use “rice polish”, “rice bran”, “rice pollard” or “rice mill feed” for materials that are related but not identical. Feedipedia notes that rice-milling by-products do not follow strict naming conventions and may be mixtures from different stages. A buyer should not rely on the name alone.
How rice polish is produced during milling
After paddy rice is cleaned, the husk is removed to produce brown rice. Milling then removes the bran layers, and polishing improves the appearance and surface of the white kernel. Fine material collected during these later stages is commonly sold as rice polish. The mill's equipment, degree of polishing, separation system and treatment of broken grains all affect the final product.
This is why two consignments carrying the same trade name can differ in colour, texture, fibre, oil, starch, ash and contamination levels. Rice bran
Rice bran is removed from the outer brown-rice layers during whitening. It can be full-fat, stabilized or defatted after oil extraction. Broken rice and rice mill feed
Broken rice consists mainly of pieces of the white kernel and is usually higher in starch than bran-rich material. Rice mill feed may combine bran, polishings, hulls or screenings. Buyers should clarify whether an offer is a single milling fraction or a blended by-product.
Common uses of rice polish
The main commercial use is as an animal feed raw material. Depending on its analysis and the nutritionist's formulation, rice polish may be incorporated into feeds for poultry, cattle, pigs and other livestock. It may contribute energy, fat, protein and other nutrients, but none of these should be assumed at a fixed level.
Some mills and buyers also use rice by-products in industrial or fermentation applications. Suitability depends on the process and specification. Material intended for feed should be sourced, stored and transported under controls appropriate to feed ingredients and the buyer's applicable regulations.
Why feed manufacturers use it
Feed manufacturers consider rice polish because it can provide a practical use for a locally or regionally available milling stream and may offer useful nutritional and economic value within a balanced formula. It can also diversify the raw-material basket where reliance on one cereal ingredient creates procurement risk.
Inclusion is not automatic. A qualified animal nutritionist must assess current laboratory results, the target animal, life stage, the complete formulation and any regulatory limits. The value of a consignment depends on usable nutrients, consistency and handling quality—not simply its price per tonne.
Quality considerations for buyers
A rice polish supplier should be able to describe the source and provide a recent specification or certificate of analysis where required. Relevant parameters vary by buyer, but a request may address:

- Protein, fat, fibre, ash or starch parameters relevant to the formulation
- Degree of husk, foreign matter or other milling-stream inclusion
