Buying and specification guide
Aggregates and sand should be ordered by intended use, grading and project quantity. Source suitability depends on the mix design or construction layer, not simply on the material's common name.
Application and grading
Concrete, mortar, plaster, drainage, road base and general fill each need different particle distribution and cleanliness.
- State the intended layer, mix or structural use
- Provide grading envelope, nominal size and fines limits
- Identify shape, abrasion, strength or deleterious-material limits where specified
Testing and acceptance
Project specifications may require source approval, sampling or laboratory results before bulk delivery.
- List the governing project or material standard
- State required grading, moisture, density or strength-related tests
- Agree whether acceptance occurs at source, delivery or both
Volume and haul planning
Loose volume, compacted volume and mass are not interchangeable, so estimates should state the basis used.
- Provide measured quantity and allowance basis
- Describe access, tipping area and delivery-hour restrictions
- Plan truck size, delivery sequence and stockpile separation
Prepare the RFQ
Share the application, grading or nominal size, standard and tests, estimated tonnage or measured volume, moisture basis, project location, access limits, delivery sequence and required records.
Sourcing and export
Construction materials are supplied in project quantities, phased against the build programme.
Availability, origin and documentation are confirmed per inquiry.
Frequently asked questions
How should aggregate quantity be stated?
State whether the figure is tonnes, loose cubic metres or compacted cubic metres and identify any wastage or compaction allowance used.
What test information may be needed?
Depending on use, buyers may request grading, fines, moisture, abrasion, strength or contamination results. List the project standard rather than assuming a universal test set.
What site details affect delivery?
Road access, turning space, tipping point, truck limits, working hours and stockpile separation all affect a workable delivery plan.
