Buying and specification guide

Laboratory chemicals should be sourced against analytical purpose, purity and method requirements. A reagent suitable for routine preparation may not be appropriate for trace analysis or instrument work.

Grade and intended method

Define whether the requirement is for general laboratory use, analytical work, instrument analysis, microbiology, teaching or another controlled method.

  • State the chemical name, formula and required purity or grade
  • Provide the method, standard or maximum impurity limits where relevant
  • Identify whether a prepared solution, solid, solvent or reference material is required

COA, SDS and traceability

Documentation requirements should be agreed before ordering rather than requested after receipt.

  • Request the safety data sheet and certificate of analysis where needed
  • State lot, expiry, assay or traceability requirements
  • List any documentation needed for the laboratory's quality system

Pack size, storage and handling

Small-volume laboratories and high-use facilities need different pack strategies; chemical compatibility and expiry can make a larger pack uneconomical.

  • Specify pack material, pack size and number of units
  • Describe controlled-temperature, light-sensitive or segregated storage needs
  • Confirm the receiving laboratory can safely handle and store the requested chemical

Prepare the RFQ

Provide chemical name and formula, grade, purity, intended analytical method, pack size, quantity, acceptable shelf-life position, storage conditions, destination and required COA, SDS or traceability records.

Frequently asked questions

Which reagent grade should a buyer request?

Use the method or laboratory quality requirement to define grade and impurity limits. If uncertain, share the intended test so suitable options can be assessed.

Can a certificate of analysis be requested?

Yes. State that a COA is required and identify any lot-specific values that must appear before the source is approved.

Why does pack size matter for laboratory chemicals?

Pack size affects exposure after opening, expiry management, storage space and waste. Order quantities should reflect actual consumption and safe storage capacity.
