Coal Price Per Ton: What Determines the Cost?

Understand coal pricing by energy, quality, origin, shipment size and delivery terms before comparing bulk offers.

There is no single coal price per ton. A usable price identifies the coal specification, whether the unit is a metric tonne, the currency, quantity, timing and delivery term. Benchmark assessments describe particular market products and locations; a supplier quotation must address the buyer's actual consignment and route.

Compare energy as well as tonnes

Higher calorific value can reduce the tonnes needed for a given heat input, but only when both values use the same gross/net and moisture basis. Compare delivered cost per gigajoule after normalising the specification. Plant efficiency, ash handling and fuel preparation can change the operational result further.

For an illustration rather than a market offer, assume two delivered prices of USD 100 and USD 110 per metric tonne and net energies of 20 and 24 GJ/t. Their fuel costs are USD 5.00 and about USD 4.58 per GJ respectively, before conversion efficiency and other operating costs. The higher tonne price can therefore represent cheaper energy. These invented teaching numbers are not Duara Group prices.

Quality and commercial conditions

Ash, sulfur and moisture influence acceptance and the cost of using the coal. Particle-size preparation, washing and independent inspection can add costs but may improve suitability. Metallurgical grades are also valued for their process performance, so an energy-only comparison is insufficient for coking and PCI purchases.

Origin affects inland haulage, export arrangements and freight. Order quantity affects parcel economics, while recurring schedules may need storage or capacity commitments. Compare the same shipment period and price-validity date; a quote issued weeks earlier may no longer be firm.

Does CIF include every arrival cost?

No. Read the contract and Incoterm carefully. A CIF price should not be treated as an all-inclusive factory-delivered cost.

Where can I obtain a confirmed price?

Send a complete coal RFQ. Duara Group confirms price and terms only after assessing the source and delivery requirement.

Turn the guidance into a comparable offer

Ask the proposed supplier to separate confirmed information from open items. Record the product, source country, analytical basis, shipment quantity and named delivery point on the same comparison sheet. An offer that omits one of these fields should be clarified before it is ranked against complete offers. Do not treat an indicative market description as an accepted consignment specification.

For a recurring programme, agree how changes in source or quality will be approved and how each delivery will be sampled. Keep technical approval separate from payment and freight approval, then reconcile them in the purchase contract. This helps prevent a commercially attractive offer from bypassing the receiving plant's acceptance conditions.

Duara Group assesses sourcing requirements from Kenya for African and international buyers. Origin, availability, assay, price and delivery terms require transaction-specific confirmation. Request a bulk coal quotation with your specification, metric-ton quantity, destination and delivery window.
