South African Coal Suppliers: A Guide for International Buyers
Evaluate South African coal offers by grade, exporter identity, quality evidence and confirmed inland and port logistics.

Table of Contents
International buyers of South African coal should qualify the product and the export chain together. A supplier must demonstrate a workable source, the offered specification, authority to sell and access to the transport route stated in the offer. A quotation referencing Richards Bay does not by itself establish terminal access or a vessel allocation.
Define the commercial coal category
Separate thermal coal inquiries from metallurgical coal. Thermal procurement compares energy and combustion requirements; coking and PCI procurement needs steelworks-specific approval. Do not assume that an exporter of one category can supply every rank and metallurgical grade.
Ask for a complete specification with GCV/NCV, analytical bases, ash, sulfur, total moisture, volatile matter and size. For coking coal, request the required plasticity and coke-performance tests. For PCI, evaluate grindability, preparation requirements and injection performance. A national origin cannot replace these data.
Coal regions and export routes
Minerals Council South Africa describes coal resources in the country's north-east, including the traditional Witbank/Emalahleni area and Waterberg in Limpopo. It identifies Richards Bay Coal Terminal as the primary export port with a dedicated rail connection. These regional descriptions do not establish a particular seller's mine access or terminal allocation.
Qualify the exporter and contracting parties
SARS states that exporters must register, and describes additional arrangements for foreign exporters, including a registered agent. Confirm the applicable structure with the exporter and customs adviser. Identify the seller, exporter, shipper, consignee, inspection company and payment beneficiary in the contract file; do not assume they are the same legal entity.
Request current supporting evidence for the actual transaction. Company registration alone does not establish title to coal. Check the chain of authority and agree how goods will be identified as the contracted lot before payment milestones are reached.
Link inland transport to the shipment window
Coal export planning depends on movement from source to loading point as well as vessel readiness. The buyer should ask who controls inland carriage, stock accumulation, terminal scheduling and loading documents. A port's design capacity is not a shipment schedule. Build the delivery window around confirmed arrangements and provide a process for notifying delays.
For FOB, CFR and CIF offers, name the port and Incoterms edition. Under CFR and CIF the seller arranges the main carriage, but risk transfer is not postponed automatically to arrival. Clarify insurance coverage, demurrage, discharge and destination charges in the contract rather than relying on a three-letter label alone.
Can I compare an FOB quote directly with a delivered offer?
Only after adding the missing freight, insurance where required, handling, customs and inland costs on a consistent specification and quantity basis.
Turn the guidance into a comparable offer
Ask the proposed supplier to separate confirmed information from open items. Record the product, source country, analytical basis, shipment quantity and named delivery point on the same comparison sheet. An offer that omits one of these fields should be clarified before it is ranked against complete offers. Do not treat an indicative market description as an accepted consignment specification.
For a recurring programme, agree how changes in source or quality will be approved and how each delivery will be sampled. Keep technical approval separate from payment and freight approval, then reconcile them in the purchase contract. This helps prevent a commercially attractive offer from bypassing the receiving plant's acceptance conditions.
