Industrial buyers can approach coal importers, established traders or sourcing companies serving Kenya, including Duara Group. Start with a written plant specification and destination, then request evidence for the offered source and delivery plan. A supplier located in Kenya may sell imported coal; its address does not establish a Kenyan mine origin.

Choose the supply route before comparing suppliers

A delivered truck programme, a regional cross-border purchase and a seaborne cargo carry different responsibilities. Ask whether the quotation covers the final factory gate, a named inland collection point or a discharge port. Check unloading equipment, weighbridge arrangements, receiving hours and how waiting time will be charged. A low port price may become an expensive factory delivery after handling and inland transport.

For smaller call-offs, ask whether the seller can identify the underlying lot and preserve traceability through storage and truck dispatch. For cargo-scale buying, confirm the importing party, customs broker, discharge capacity and inland evacuation plan before agreeing a shipment window.

Select the grade for the equipment

Cement plants and boilers usually evaluate thermal coal against their fuel envelope. A coal rank alone does not establish suitability. Provide calorific value with GCV/NCV and moisture basis, maximum ash and sulfur, total moisture, size distribution and any ash-chemistry or grindability limits. Do not use an unqualified label such as “5,500 coal” as a complete specification.

Separate imports from domestic development

Kenya's Ministry of Energy describes coal exploration and proposed development around Mui and other areas. That planning information does not demonstrate that a particular commercial shipment comes from an operating Kenyan mine. Ask for origin documentation for the actual offer. Tanzanian origin may be evaluated for regional supply, while other origins need their own logistics and quality assessment.

Questions to put to each supplier

  • What source and lot does the analysis cover, and when was it sampled?
  • What is included in the delivered price and what remains for the buyer?
  • How are truck weights, moisture changes and quality disputes handled?
  • Can the first delivery be treated as an approved trial before recurring call-offs?

Does a local supplier eliminate import checks?

No. Verify the contractual seller, ownership or authority to sell, product origin and available customs evidence. Local storage does not replace due diligence on the goods.

Turn the guidance into a comparable offer

Ask the proposed supplier to separate confirmed information from open items. Record the product, source country, analytical basis, shipment quantity and named delivery point on the same comparison sheet. An offer that omits one of these fields should be clarified before it is ranked against complete offers. Do not treat an indicative market description as an accepted consignment specification.

For a recurring programme, agree how changes in source or quality will be approved and how each delivery will be sampled. Keep technical approval separate from payment and freight approval, then reconcile them in the purchase contract. This helps prevent a commercially attractive offer from bypassing the receiving plant's acceptance conditions.

Duara Group assesses sourcing requirements from Kenya for African and international buyers. Origin, availability, assay, price and delivery terms require transaction-specific confirmation. Request a bulk coal quotation with your specification, metric-ton quantity, destination and delivery window.
