Coal Suppliers in Tanzania: Types, Grades and Export Options
A practical Tanzania coal sourcing guide covering producing regions, quality evidence, regional transport and export checks.

Table of Contents
Tanzanian coal sourcing should begin with the offered mine or trader source, a representative analysis and a route-specific delivery proposal. The country name is not a specification. Duara Group can assess commercial inquiries without representing reserved mine allocations, permanent stock or guaranteed export capacity.
Producing regions and source verification
Tanzania's National Development Corporation describes the Ngaka coal operation in Mbinga District, Ruvuma, and sales to domestic cement manufacturers and neighbouring markets. STAMICO reporting also identifies the Kiwira/Kabulo coal project in Songwe. These sources provide industry context, not proof that an intermediary holds an allocation or that a particular grade is available today.
Ask the seller to identify the proposed source, its authority to supply, whether the product is washed or run-of-mine, and whether screening takes place before dispatch. Keep proposed power-project capacity separate from operating coal production. Older project descriptions must not be converted into present shipment promises.
Specifications for industrial buyers
Thermal buyers should compare delivered energy, ash, sulfur, moisture and particle size. Cement operators may also require ash chemistry; pulverised-fuel systems may need grindability information. Test results should identify their basis and sampling date. A historical mine assay describes a sample, not every future consignment.
If two suppliers quote different bases, request a laboratory-supported reconciliation. An attractive gross air-dried figure cannot be compared directly with a net as-received figure. Ask whether the acceptance sample is collected at source, loading or destination and how moisture changes during transport are addressed.
Regional routes and exports
NDC's project information highlights the importance of inland road haulage. Obtain a route proposal for the actual destination: mine-to-factory regional trucking and mine-to-port ocean shipment have different cost structures. Agree border procedures, loading equipment, axle or access restrictions, transit documents, insurance scope and final delivery responsibility with the appropriate carriers and brokers.
Before contracting, confirm current export eligibility and documents for the named source and destination. Do not infer permission to export from a producer's historical sales. For ocean cargoes, have the shipper and carrier review the applicable bulk-cargo requirements before fixing freight.
Is every Tanzanian coal suitable for cement?
No. Suitability depends on the plant and proposed consignment. Start with steam coal requirements and the plant's approved limits, then qualify the offered lot.
Turn the guidance into a comparable offer
Ask the proposed supplier to separate confirmed information from open items. Record the product, source country, analytical basis, shipment quantity and named delivery point on the same comparison sheet. An offer that omits one of these fields should be clarified before it is ranked against complete offers. Do not treat an indicative market description as an accepted consignment specification.
For a recurring programme, agree how changes in source or quality will be approved and how each delivery will be sampled. Keep technical approval separate from payment and freight approval, then reconcile them in the purchase contract. This helps prevent a commercially attractive offer from bypassing the receiving plant's acceptance conditions.
