Yams

True yams for wholesale and processing, with species, variety, tuber quality and handling specified.

True yams are Dioscorea tubers, a different product family from sweet potatoes even where regional retail names overlap. Buyers need to identify the species or recognised variety and the desired eating or processing characteristics. Whole fresh tubers, prepared frozen products and flour should not share an undefined specification. Duara Group assesses the required form, size, condition, packing and destination. The country section documents the yam crop; it does not verify every species, a processed-product factory or a confirmed Duara supply origin.

Yams buying guide

True yams and trade-name clarity

Specify the botanical or accepted commercial identity rather than ordering only by the word yam. White, water and other yam types can have different market expectations. Sweet potatoes are a separate catalogue product and should not be substituted because a regional label calls them yams. If the buyer needs a particular flesh colour or cooking characteristic, make that part of the written schedule. Product photographs should support identification, not replace a supplier's declaration and sample approval.

Tuber quality and acceptance

Define size, shape, skin condition and tolerances for cuts, bruising, pests, decay and other defects. A representative inspection should consider internal condition as well as appearance. Establish whether soil removal, washing, trimming or another preparation is expected and how it affects the quoted weight. Avoid treating a single large tuber as evidence of a uniform lot. Where a market grade is requested, identify the standard and sampling basis rather than assuming that grade names have identical meanings across origins.

Uses and processing requirements

Fresh-food buyers should describe the customer market and preferred tuber presentation. Caterers may need a consistent preparation result and manageable unit size. A flour or prepared-food processor should identify the process, composition and functionality required, then test a representative sample. A fresh-crop statistic cannot establish flour production or frozen processing. Only an agreed specification can determine whether a particular species or lot is suitable for the buyer's application; no general food-grade or processing guarantee follows from the crop name.

Packing, lifting and transport

Choose bags, crates or other bulk packaging around the tuber's weight, protection and receiving arrangements. Confirm net contents, ventilation, stacking restrictions and whether pallets are required. Review loading and unloading methods so handling does not introduce damage after inspection. Treatment, curing or preservation arrangements, where proposed, should be documented rather than assumed. A pack suitable for a short local movement may not be appropriate for an export journey with multiple transfers and storage periods.

Storage history and receiving checks

Ask for harvest, preparation or packing information relevant to the lot and agree the proposed storage conditions. Monitor signs of deterioration and sprouting as part of the receiving specification, using a sampling plan agreed before shipment. Do not assume the same shelf life for every yam type or prepared form. The buyer should plan the time between arrival, distribution and use, and establish how pack damage, weight differences or internal-quality concerns will be documented and resolved.

Bulk yam inquiry requirements

Provide species or variety, form, tuber size, condition, packing, quantity and destination. Explain the intended food application and any customer requirements for preparation, inspection or documentation. Where regional names are ambiguous, include a botanical declaration or a reference sample before requesting alternatives. Duara assesses current sourcing and the proposed supply route against that information. No fixed stock level, minimum order, certificate, seasonal availability or transport duration is established by this general buying guide or the production-country directory.

Documented Production by Country

The records below describe yam crop production; not sweet potato production. Quantities are national production statistics for the stated year, not available export quantities or Duara supply capacity. Estimates are labelled; uncorroborated imputed observations are retained internally rather than published as verified production.

These are dated production or manufacturing records, not a list of Duara suppliers or confirmed delivery destinations. The directory covers the evidence verified so far; it does not claim an exhaustive list of all producing countries.

Frequently asked questions

Are yams sweet potatoes?

No. True yams are Dioscorea tubers. Sweet potatoes are a different crop, even though trade names can overlap in some markets. Confirm the identity before comparing offers.

Does a yam country record identify the species offered?

No. The crop statistics do not establish a particular variety or commercial lot. A supplier's product declaration and the buyer's acceptance specification are still required.

Can a fresh-root offer be used for a flour order?

Not automatically. Flour production, processing and functional quality need their own evidence and specification. Identify the required form at the start of the inquiry.

How should tuber sizes be compared?

Use an agreed weight or dimensional basis, shape limits and tolerances. State net pack contents separately so a larger bag is not mistaken for a more consistent product.
