Sardines

Sardines and pilchards by species, whole-fish or prepared form, size, packing medium and traceability.

Sardines and related pilchard or sardinella products are traded fresh, frozen and in prepared packs. The species and the intended product must be identified rather than inferred from a can illustration or a general small-fish description. A whole-fish procurement programme is distinct from a canned-sardine order. Duara Group assesses species, form, quality, pack, volume and destination. The country directory covers selected sardine-family production records, not all herrings or anchovies, and does not establish canning capacity or confirmed commercial availability through Duara.

Sardines buying guide

Sardines, pilchards and species identity

Write the scientific species or a buyer-approved list and the commercial description required in the destination market. Do not assume that any small herring or anchovy is an acceptable sardine substitute. European pilchard, Sardinops and Sardinella products can require different declarations and customer approvals. The product label, quotation and traceability documents should agree. National statistics in the directory retain a defined species scope and should not be presented as production of every fish that might be sold under a regional canned-fish name.

Whole fish and prepared products

Fresh or frozen whole fish should be specified by condition, size and presentation. A prepared or canned product needs further detail about cleaning, cooking, physical style and packing medium. State whether the buyer requires whole fish, fillets or another presentation, and how skin, bones and other parts should be treated. Do not compare whole-fish live-weight production with finished can weights as though conversion were fixed. The actual processor and product specification determine the appropriate commercial comparison.

Cans, pouches and ingredient requirements

A canned or pouched inquiry should identify the package format, product style, medium such as oil, brine or sauce, ingredient declaration, net and drained contents where applicable, and the required label. Request evidence for the process, pack integrity, lot coding and shelf-life statement. Artwork and customer standards should be approved before production is committed. A country that reports sardine catches is not automatically a verified manufacturer of the requested retail pack or a source of private-label capacity.

Food safety and catch traceability

Ask for the species, catch traceability appropriate to the source, processor identity and the records required for the intended use and destination. The product's food-safety system should address relevant handling and processing hazards, including histamine controls where applicable. Freezing or can appearance alone is not evidence that those controls were effective. Any sustainability or certification claim needs verification for the actual fishery, operator and product scope. No such claim is made for Duara by this general catalogue description.

Packing, storage and receiving checks

Chilled or frozen whole fish need a suitable cold chain, while prepared ambient-stable products need a process-supported storage specification. Confirm inner and outer packaging, case count, net contents, labels and pallet configuration for the exact form ordered. Incoming checks should record pack damage, condition and traceability against an agreed sampling plan. Do not transfer a shelf-life claim from a canned product to fresh fish, or assume that all cans have the same life regardless of process, ingredients and packaging.

Information for a sardine quotation

Provide species, form, size, quality, preparation, packing medium where relevant, net and drained contents, pack, volume and destination. Include customer artwork, testing, traceability or certification requirements and identify sample approval responsibilities. Duara reviews a proposed supply chain and route against those details. Statistical catches are assigned to a fishing flag, which is distinct from catch waters, landing, processing and shipment origin. No available lot, canning operation, fixed minimum quantity or delivery period is guaranteed by a country entry.

Documented Production by Country

Sardina, Sardinops and Sardinella taxa; excludes unrelated herrings and anchovies. Capture is attributed to the fishing flag, not necessarily the waters fished, landing, processing or shipment country. Aquaculture is identified separately. Quantities are live-weight subtotals from official or estimated records, not fillet, canned or export volumes. Other flags are withheld, so these are not asserted national totals.

These are dated production or manufacturing records, not a list of Duara suppliers or confirmed delivery destinations. The directory covers the evidence verified so far; it does not claim an exhaustive list of all producing countries.

Frequently asked questions

Does sardine capture prove canned-sardine manufacture?

No. Catching fish and producing a canned product are separate activities. Confirm the actual processor, species, preparation, ingredients and packaging for a canned order.

Can any small fish be substituted as sardines?

Not automatically. Specify the scientific species or approved list and the commercial designation appropriate to the destination, then approve alternatives explicitly.

Why state net and drained contents separately?

They describe different aspects of a prepared pack. Agree the relevant declarations and measurement basis so products with different media or contents are compared correctly.

Do the country records include every herring or anchovy?

No. The reviewed statistical selection is restricted to the stated sardine-family scope. It is not the entire broader herring, sardine and anchovy reporting group.
