Shrimp & Prawns

Shrimp and prawns specified by species, count basis, head and shell presentation, processing and packing.

Shrimp and prawns share this canonical page because the commercial names overlap across markets and do not provide a universal large-versus-small or species distinction. Whiteleg shrimp, tiger shrimp or prawns, cold-water species and giant freshwater prawns still need separate product specifications. Duara Group assesses scientific identity, farmed or capture source, physical form, count, processing, packing and destination. The production directory covers recorded shrimp-and-prawn output, not a promise of every species, size, certification or available Duara origin.

Shrimp & Prawns buying guide

Names are not a species specification

Write the scientific species or an agreed commercial identity, for example a defined whiteleg, tiger or giant freshwater prawn requirement. Do not assume that prawn means a particular size or that shrimp always identifies a different biological group. Warm-water, cold-water, farmed and captured products should be distinguished where relevant. The same common name can be used differently by two suppliers, so connect the quotation, sample, label and traceability records to the actual species rather than comparing the names alone.

Count sizing and presentation

Define the count basis and its weight unit, and confirm whether the count applies to the product in the form ordered. Head-on shell-on, headless, peeled, tail-on and deveined forms are not equivalent measures of usable product. State tolerances for broken pieces and presentation defects. For frozen packs, agree the glaze and net-weight measurement method. A quoted package weight should not be treated as the same amount of edible shrimp if heads, shells, added water or glaze are included differently.

Raw, cooked and prepared requirements

Specify raw or cooked status and whether the product is intended for further processing or service under the buyer's food-safety controls. Individual freezing and block presentation suit different handling and portioning needs. If breaded, marinated or otherwise prepared product is required, obtain the full ingredient and allergen information and a separate specification. A production-country figure cannot establish that a particular cooking, freezing or preparation operation exists there or that the requested product is available through Duara.

Quality, treatments and traceability

Agree the checks for physical condition, odour, texture, defects and the documentation appropriate to the actual product. Ask for any treatment or additive declaration, including preservation or appearance treatments where proposed. Verify farm or capture traceability and processing-site identity. Food-safety and sustainability claims need evidence for the actual operator, species and scope; they are not established by the terms premium or export quality. The buyer should define sampling, testing and acceptance arrangements before approving a commercial lot.

Packing and the complete cold chain

Confirm inner bags, blocks, master cases, net contents, labels and pallet configuration. Chilled, raw frozen and cooked frozen products need product-specific temperature and receiving plans. Review how the product will be handled at transfers, unloaded and stored, with suitable records and a process for excursions. Shelf life must relate to the actual processing and pack, not a general promise for every crustacean. Traceability should remain intact when a wholesale case is split for kitchen or retail use.

Preparing a comparable inquiry

Send species, farmed or capture preference, count basis, head/shell/tail presentation, vein requirement, raw or cooked status, treatments, glaze basis, pack, volume and destination. Identify intended use and any customer testing or document schedule. Require approval for changes in species or presentation. Duara assesses an actual supply route and lot against those requirements. The single page accounts for both shrimp and prawn trade-name searches while preserving the distinctions that matter to a buyer, without inventing two duplicate product ranges.

Documented Production by Country

FAO Shrimps, prawns statistical group, shared by the combined product page. Capture is attributed to the fishing flag, not necessarily the waters fished, landing, processing or shipment country. Aquaculture is identified separately. Quantities are live-weight subtotals from official or estimated records, not fillet, canned or export volumes. Other flags are withheld, so these are not asserted national totals.

These are dated production or manufacturing records, not a list of Duara suppliers or confirmed delivery destinations. The directory covers the evidence verified so far; it does not claim an exhaustive list of all producing countries.

Frequently asked questions

Why do prawns and shrimp share a page?

The trade names overlap and vary by market. One canonical buying page avoids a false universal distinction, while its specification still separates scientific species, size, source and processing form.

Can counts be compared without knowing the weight unit?

No. The count and the unit must be defined, along with the head and shell presentation. Otherwise apparently similar size descriptions may refer to different products.

Does peeled mean deveined?

Not necessarily. State peeling, tail and vein requirements explicitly and verify the actual product specification rather than relying on a short commercial abbreviation.

Do national figures establish a certified supplier?

No. They document production activity. Certification, farm or vessel records, processor approval, lot availability and delivery feasibility need separate confirmation.
