Crab

Crab by species and product form, from whole animals to claws, sections and prepared meat requirements.

Crab is a diverse seafood buying category rather than one standard product. Mud, swimming, snow and king-crab types, among others, require clear scientific and commercial identification. Whole animals, legs, claws and prepared meat also have different weight, processing and quality requirements. Duara Group assesses the species, form, size, treatment, packing and destination before reviewing a supply option. Country-production records do not establish a particular meat grade, a processing plant, a sustainability claim or an available Duara lot.

Crab buying guide

Species and the parts being purchased

Identify the scientific species and the intended commercial product. A mud-crab order is not interchangeable with a snow- or king-crab section order, and the word swimming crab is not a complete specification for every market. Declare whole animal, legs, claws, sections or meat and state raw, cooked or live status. Keep the identity connected to labels and lot records. Similar colour or a product photograph should not be used as a substitute for a reliable species declaration.

Size, meat description and usable yield

Agree the size or weight basis for the form ordered and the treatment of damaged or missing parts. Whole-animal weight should not be compared with extracted-meat weight on an assumed yield. Meat buyers should define the required presentation and acceptable fragment or shell content, together with any ingredient or treatment declaration. Grade names can vary between operators, so describe the physical product and testing basis. A sample should be representative of the proposed commercial lot and assessed in the intended application.

Food-service and manufacturing applications

A restaurant may require a specific whole-animal presentation, while a manufacturer may need cooked meat for a filling, salad or another preparation. State the intended process, portion and consistency requirements. A pasteurised, frozen or canned product needs evidence for its own processing and packaging, not merely the origin of the captured animal. Food-safety requirements remain separate from cosmetic or size grades. The product page does not establish that any particular preparation is suitable for immediate service without further buyer controls.

Live handling and processor evidence

Live-crab inquiries require a specialist handling and receiving plan for the actual species and route. They are not routine chilled or frozen orders. For prepared products, request processor identity, lot coding, process information and the records appropriate to the intended use and destination. Verify any certification or fishery claim for its actual scope. Country production is background evidence only and cannot confirm that an individual consignment is legally sourced, correctly processed, exportable or available through a Duara supplier.

Packing and cold-chain requirements

Confirm inner packs, case configuration, declared net contents, labels and pallet limits. Frozen sections, cooked meat and live animals need different transport and receiving arrangements. Agree temperature-control evidence and a process for excursions, damage or pack-integrity concerns. Shelf life should be supported for the actual process and pack rather than inferred from a general crab description. Keep traceability intact when cases are divided or product is repacked for a kitchen, retailer or further manufacturer.

Preparing a crab procurement request

Provide scientific species, form, live/raw/cooked status, size or meat requirements, quality limits, treatments, packing, quantity and destination. Identify the intended use and the party responsible for sample and document approval. Require explicit approval for species or presentation changes. Duara assesses a proposed source and route against that schedule. The country directory distinguishes farming from flag-attributed capture and does not imply that all named species or prepared forms are produced in every country listed.

Documented Production by Country

Named crab taxa, including king and freshwater crabs; excludes horseshoe and hermit crabs. Capture is attributed to the fishing flag, not necessarily the waters fished, landing, processing or shipment country. Aquaculture is identified separately. Quantities are live-weight subtotals from official or estimated records, not fillet, canned or export volumes. Other flags are withheld, so these are not asserted national totals.

These are dated production or manufacturing records, not a list of Duara suppliers or confirmed delivery destinations. The directory covers the evidence verified so far; it does not claim an exhaustive list of all producing countries.

Frequently asked questions

Can a crab meat grade be inferred from the species name?

No. Specify the actual meat presentation, physical quality, permitted fragments and other requirements. Grade terminology should be defined by the agreed product specification.

Are whole crab and prepared meat comparable by weight?

Not directly. They represent different forms and usable-product bases. Agree the required form and net contents without assuming a fixed extraction yield.

Does capture output establish a canning or pasteurisation plant?

No. Those processes need separate operator, facility and product evidence. A capture-country record is not proof of a prepared-food supply chain.

What changes need buyer approval?

Species, product form, processing, treatments, grading and packing changes should be reviewed. Similar appearance or a common trade name does not establish equivalence.
