Blueberries

Blueberries for retail, food service and processing with variety, firmness, bloom and pack requirements.

Blueberries are traded as fresh fruit and as ingredients for freezing, bakery, dairy and other processing uses. Buyers often need to balance berry size and visual presentation with firmness and the condition required at the end of distribution. Cultivated and wild-fruit supply descriptions should be identified rather than assumed equivalent. Duara Group assesses the required form, quality, pack and destination. Production statistics describe the blueberry crop recorded by a reporting country; they do not establish a particular cultivar, processing operation or stock position available to Duara.

Blueberries buying guide

Product type and supply form

Specify whether the buyer needs cultivated blueberries, a defined wild-fruit product or another particular commercial description. Fresh punnets, frozen berries and fruit for processing require separate specifications. A blueberry crop record should not be used to assume that a country produces every frozen or dried form. If a named variety is important for firmness, size or customer preference, identify it and set an approval process for alternatives rather than relying on the general term premium.

Firmness, bloom and inspection

Ask how berry size and firmness will be assessed and whether a particular size distribution is required. The natural surface bloom is a useful presentation characteristic, but appearance should be assessed alongside decay, split fruit, soft berries and foreign material. Inspection should use representative packs and consider the condition below the visible top layer. Define any defect tolerances and analytical testing in the purchase specification. A photograph cannot establish the consistency of the full commercial lot or replace the agreed sampling method.

Matching fruit to the application

A supermarket promotion may require an agreed punnet size, a strong visual presentation and consistent replenishment. A bakery or dairy processor may care more about the behaviour of berries during mixing, heating or freezing. Food-service buyers should explain whether fruit will be served whole, folded into a dessert or cooked. State whether broken fruit, size variation or added ingredients are permitted in a processed product. These choices should be evaluated in the buyer's actual process, not inferred from the origin.

Packing and chilled movement

Specify the punnet or bulk container, net contents, case configuration, ventilation and label requirements. Confirm how the pack protects the berries from compression and how pallets will be handled at transfer points. Plan cooling and the full chilled route with the proposed supplier. A frozen product needs a separate temperature and packaging plan, including clarity on frozen weight and any declared ingredients. Do not compare fresh and frozen quotations as though the only difference were the transport price.

Receiving and onward handling

Agree arrival-condition checks, the evidence required for temperature control and the point at which risk transfers under the commercial terms. The buyer should plan receiving capacity and onward distribution before approving the lot. Ask for packing or processing dates and the handling instructions applicable to that product. A shelf-life statement must relate to the proposed form and lot, not a generic description of the crop. Document how soft fruit, leaking packs or temperature excursions will be assessed if a problem occurs.

Bulk procurement and sample approval

Provide form, type, variety if required, size, firmness, pack, volume and destination. Identify the end application and any restrictions on ingredients or processing. For repeated orders, agree how the supplier will maintain a consistent specification and how changes will be approved. A sample review can establish a reference, but it should be connected to the proposed lot or production standard. Current origin, availability, documentation and shipment arrangements remain subject to confirmation against the actual inquiry.

Documented Production by Country

The records below describe blueberry fruit crop production. Quantities are national production statistics for the stated year, not available export quantities or Duara supply capacity. Estimates are labelled; uncorroborated imputed observations are retained internally rather than published as verified production.

These are dated production or manufacturing records, not a list of Duara suppliers or confirmed delivery destinations. The directory covers the evidence verified so far; it does not claim an exhaustive list of all producing countries.

Frequently asked questions

Does a blueberry-producing country necessarily freeze blueberries?

No. Growing, freezing and other processing are different activities. The crop directory does not prove the availability or location of a particular processing service.

Are wild and cultivated blueberries interchangeable?

Not automatically. Specify the commercial type, intended use, size and quality requirements. Evaluate any alternative through the buyer's approval process rather than assuming the same performance in retail or manufacturing.

What should a retail pack specification include?

Include net weight, punnet design, case count, labels, size and quality criteria, plus handling and receiving requirements. Clarify who approves artwork and how lot codes remain traceable after cases are split.

Can a generic shelf-life figure be relied on?

No. Product form, condition, packing, handling history and the destination chain need to be considered together. Request the actual lot information and agree arrival-condition criteria.
